The Arabic word Sabr (صبر), meaning “patience” or “the ability to calmly endure adversity,” serves as the starting point for Friedrich Andreoni’s exploration of resilience and the ephemeral nature of language.

In Sabr, a magnetic tape loops continuously in the space, carrying the recorded voice of a muezzin pronouncing the word Sabr. However, the original 3-seconds recording is manipulated and stretched, dissolving into a 2-minutes lingering vibrational sound trace. With each cycle, the tape slowly erodes—its materiality breaking down, its signal fading. The word, once clear, progressively disappears, mirroring the fragility of memory, endurance, and meaning itself.

Through this process, Andreoni presents Sabr not as a fixed linguistic sign but as an experience unfolding in time, making the semantics of the word perceptible beyond its mere definition. The word is not only heard but felt in its disintegration, resonating as both an invocation of patience and a meditation on impermanence. As the tape deteriorates, the work materializes the tension between persistence and dissolution, questioning how language carries—and ultimately loses—its presence in the face of time.
